Chlorine is instantly produced by electrolyzing brine solution.
Common salt (equivalent to IS 797 grade II) is mixed with water to prepare brine solution.
This solution is passed across electrodes & low voltage direct current is applied.
Inside the cell the mixture undergoes a partial electrolysis of NaCl contained in it & the result is Chlorinated brine solution called Sodium Hypochlorite containing hypochlorous ions & hydrogen gas

By adding hypochlorite to water, hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is formed, this hydrolysis reaction is reversible. The hypochlorous acid dissociates into hydrogen ions (H+) and hypochlorite ions (OCl-).
This free available chlorine is highly reactive and reacts with cell walls of micro-organisms made up of cellulose which constitutes of proteins and amino acids.

Sodium hypochlorite is effective against Plate count, Coliform & E-Coli bacteria.
